Mulbekh Monastery is a famous tourist destination in Kargil for several reasons: its location. The second major draw is a 30-foot-tall figure of Maitreya Buddha sculpted on a massive block of stone. Mulbekh Monastery is divided into two gompas: Serdung Gompa of the Drukpa sect and Rgaldan-se Gompa of the Gelugpa sect. The monastery is thought to have been established approximately 800 years ago by Tibetan scholar Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo’s pupils.
Mulbekh Monastery is perched on a crag almost 656 feet above the road and is accessible by a challenging route. The monastery’s elevation is estimated to be around 11,495 feet.
Mulbekh Monastery Attractions
Mulbekh Monastery, which consists of two gompas, has been established approximately 800 years ago. The 30-foot-tall Maitreya Buddha monument, sculpted on a massive stone slab, overlooks the Leh-Kargil motorway.
Both Buddhist and Shaivite beliefs influence the monument. There are old inscriptions around the memorial and an injunction given by King Lde urging the locals to discontinue the practice of sacrificing goats.
