Reckong Peo is headquartered in the Kinnaur district and lies in the middle of the Himalayas. Reckong Peo is situated at an altitude of 2670 m from the sea level, located 235 km from Shimla. The town is serene and is famous for its apple orchards. It is inhabited by Kinnauri people and has a diverse culture even in today’s modern era.  You can easily view the two greatest wonders of the Himalayas, i.e. the Kinner Kailash mountain and the Shivaling rock from Reckong Peo.

As per history, it was born on 1st May 1960 and was known as Kinnaura earlier. Ruled by the Guge kingdom of Tibet from the 9th to 12th centuries, the region was divided into seven parts, called the Sat Khund. The region then became a part of the Mughal Empire when it was conquered by Akbar. After the end of the Mughal empire, the district came to be known as Chini Tehsil.

Chandika Temple – The Chandika Devi Temple is located at a distance of 3 km from Reckong Peo in Kothi. This temple is in the village of Kothi and is devoted to Goddess Chandika, who is worshipped with great respect by the locals. It is believed that she was the daughter of the demon Banasur, who presided over Kinnaur. The Chandika Devi Temple is set amidst deodar forests and snow capped peaks.   

KalpaKalpa is a small village at a height of 2960 meters in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. This place is at a distance of 230 Km from Shimla and at 13 Km from Reckong-Peo the district headquarter of Kinnaur district

Brelengi Gompa – Brelengi Gompa Monastery is located in Rekong Peo.  The monastery of Mahabodhi society was constructed specially for the Dalai Lama to perform the Kalachakra ceremony in 1992.  Next to the monastery is a 10 meter statue of the standing Buddha, which is visible from a considerable distance.
